The short answer
Yes. Night owls show measurably higher scores on tests of reasoning, memory and processing speed than morning types, the largest study of it covered more than 26,000 adults, and the difference holds even when the tests are taken in the morning. The creative edge is a separate finding with a separate cause: reduced inhibitory control loosens the associations your brain is willing to make, which helps on the kind of problem where the answer arrives whole rather than step by step. None of it is a choice. Chronotype is written across 351 genetic loci and shifts the whole body clock two to three hours late. And it carries a real cost, which is the last section of this page.

01 / The study
MORNING TYPES SCORED LOWEST.
In July 2024 a team at Imperial College London published an analysis of more than 26,000 UK Biobank adults in BMJ Public Health. Everyone had completed the same battery of cognitive tests, and everyone had said whether they were a morning person or an evening person.
The people who called themselves evening types, and the people in the middle, scored higher on reasoning, memory and reaction time. The morning types came last in both samples the team looked at. The same analysis found the sleep window that maximises those scores is 7 to 9 hours, which matters more than the timing does.
Read it honestly, because the honest version is still good news. This is a cross-sectional study, so it shows an association, not a cause. Across the wider literature the correlation between eveningness and measured intelligence sits around r = 0.08, which is real and small. What it is not is a licence to say night owls are smarter. What it is: the tired stereotype runs exactly backwards.

A 2011 meta-analysis put the correlation between eveningness and intelligence at r = 0.08. Small, consistent, and pointed in the direction nobody expects.
02 / Creativity
A TIRED FILTER LETS MORE THROUGH.
The creative finding is not the same finding as the cognitive one, and it does not have the same cause. It comes down to inhibition, which is the brain filtering out the associations it judges irrelevant before you ever notice them.
In 2007 Giampietro and Cavallera ran 120 adults through a divergent thinking task and found that a preference for evenings tracked with higher originality scores. It is a small study on a narrow task, so treat it as a signal rather than a settled fact.
The stronger evidence is Wieth and Zacks in 2011. They took 428 students, sorted them into owls and larks, and gave everyone two kinds of problem at both their best hour and their worst hour. Analytic problems, the ones you grind through a known method, did not care what time it was. Insight problems, the ones where the answer arrives whole after a pause, came out consistently better at the WORST hour.
Here is the part that gets misquoted, so read it twice. Your non-optimal hour is not automatically the night. For a genuine night owl the low-inhibition window is the MORNING. The rule is not that creativity lives at 2am. The rule is that creativity lives where your filter is weakest, and the filter is a clock, not a preference.
Which is why so many builders describe the same experience from opposite directions. The owl gets the loose, associative pass in the fog of the morning and the sharp, precise pass at midnight. The lark gets them the other way around. Both are right, and neither is describing the clock on the wall.

NOBODY BOOKS A MEETING AT 1AM.
For anyone who builds things, half of the night advantage has nothing to do with biology. It is that the interruptions have gone home.

Paul Graham drew the line in 2009 and it has not moved since. A manager's day is a traditional appointment book cut into one hour intervals. A maker needs time in units of half a day at least, because you cannot write or program well in units of an hour. Every hour long slot dropped into a maker's afternoon does not cost an hour. It costs the whole block it lands in.
Then there is the cost of picking the work back up. Gloria Mark's team at the University of California, Irvine followed office workers through their actual days and timed it: after a single interruption it took an average of 23 minutes and 15 seconds to get back to the original task at the same depth of focus. People do not return directly either. There are typically two other tasks in between.

Put those together and the arithmetic is brutal. A day with six interruptions in it does not contain six lost minutes. It contains no unbroken half day at all. A tired brain with three uninterrupted hours will out-build an alert one that never gets past forty minutes, and that is before you add a distributed team where the person you need is nine time zones away and only overlaps with you after midnight.

This is the part that explains why quitting is so hard. You are not fighting a routine. You are fighting a clock that ships with the hardware.

A 2019 genome-wide analysis of 697,828 people identified 351 genetic loci associated with chronotype, up from 24. The genes cluster in circadian regulation and in tissue that includes the retina and the hypothalamus.

THE HOURS, AS DOCUMENTED.
No IQ scores appear on this page, because there are none to publish. The famous figures for historical geniuses were estimated retroactively from childhood biographies in the 1920s. Nobody ever sat them down and tested them. So the bar here is harder: output you can count, and night working a named source actually documents.
Paul Erdos
The most prolific mathematician of the 20th century

Erdos published roughly 1,500 papers and worked up to 20 hours a day, running straight through the night, sustained on coffee and on the mathematics itself. His collaboration record is so large it has its own unit of measurement: 458 people hold an Erdos number of one, and about 4,500 more hold a two. He had no home, no job and no possessions to speak of. He had output nobody has matched since.
Roughly five or six hours of sleep, bought with an enforced afternoon nap
Churchill worked routinely until 3am or 4am and slept roughly five or six hours in total, paid for with a strictly enforced afternoon nap taken in pyjamas. In his own words: "Don’t think you will be doing less work because you sleep during the day. That’s a foolish notion held by people who have no imagination. You will be able to accomplish more."
Charles Darwin appears on almost every night owl listicle on the internet. His documented daily routine was an early one, so he is not on this page. If a claim would not survive somebody checking it, it does not belong on a page whose entire argument is that the evidence holds up.

THE BILL IS REAL.
Any page that sells you the upside of working nights and stops there is selling something. Here is the other half, stated as plainly as the first half.
In 2019 a working group convened by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, the World Health Organization's cancer arm, classified night shift work as probably carcinogenic to humans, Group 2A. That verdict rests on sufficient evidence in experimental animals, strong mechanistic evidence, and limited evidence in human studies, with the strongest human signal in breast cancer.
Alongside it sits social jetlag, which is the chronic mismatch between your body clock and your calendar. It falls hardest on late chronotypes and it is associated with a spread of metabolic and mental health outcomes. The mechanism is not mysterious. It is sleep debt, accumulated every work day and never fully repaid.
Read the distinction carefully, because it matters. Rotating night SHIFT work, repeatedly forcing your body against its clock, is what carries the classified risk. A person whose clock genuinely runs late and who sleeps a full 7 to 9 hours on their own schedule is not the same case. The danger is not the hour on the clock. The danger is the debt.

01Are night owls actually more intelligent than morning people?+
Night owls score higher on cognitive tests, but "more intelligent" overstates it. The 2024 Imperial College London analysis of more than 26,000 UK Biobank adults found self-declared evening types and intermediate types scored higher than morning types on reasoning, memory and reaction time, by about 13.5 percent in one sample and 7.5 percent in another. Across the wider literature, a 2011 meta-analysis put the correlation between eveningness and measured intelligence at r = 0.08, which is a real but small effect. The accurate statement is that morning types consistently score lowest, and that the popular assumption runs backwards.
The honest answer is that they often are not, and the research says something more interesting. Wieth and Zacks tested 428 students on insight problems and analytic problems at both their best and worst hours in 2011. Insight problems, where the answer arrives whole rather than through a known method, were solved better at each person’s NON-optimal hour, when inhibitory control is weakest and the brain makes looser associations. Analytic problems showed no consistent time of day effect. For a genuine night owl, that low-inhibition window is the morning, not midnight. Creativity follows your weakest filter, not the clock on the wall.
03Why do so many programmers and developers work at night?+
Partly biology and mostly interruption. Programming needs a large abstract system held in working memory, which is what Paul Graham called the maker’s schedule: time in units of half a day at least, against a manager’s day cut into one hour intervals. Research by Gloria Mark at the University of California, Irvine measured the cost of breaking that up at 23 minutes and 15 seconds to return to an interrupted task at the same level of focus. At night the meetings, messages and drive-by questions stop, so a tired but uninterrupted brain routinely outperforms an alert but fragmented one. Distributed teams across time zones push real-time collaboration into odd hours on top of that.
04Is being a night owl genetic, or is it a habit I can break?+
It is substantially genetic. A 2019 genome-wide analysis of 697,828 people identified 351 genetic loci associated with chronotype, and in evening types the internal pacemaker itself is delayed: melatonin release and the core body temperature rhythm run on average two to three hours later than in morning types. That said, genetics loads the dial rather than locking it. In the same analysis, the 5 percent of people carrying the most morningness alleles slept only about 25 minutes earlier than the 5 percent carrying the fewest. Rotating night shift work carries a classified risk. 06What time should a night owl actually go to sleep?+
Prioritise duration over timing. The 2024 Imperial College London analysis found that 7 to 9 hours of sleep was optimal for cognitive performance, and that the duration effect was the one carrying most of the benefit. Sleeping 7 to 9 hours starting at 2am is better for your cognition than sleeping 5 hours starting at 11pm. If you need to shift earlier, the highest-leverage change is light: bright light early in your day pulls the clock earlier, bright light late pushes it later. Shrinking the difference between your work day and free day sleep timing reduces social jetlag more reliably than trying to become a different chronotype.
07Which documented geniuses actually worked at night?+
Two clear a strict bar: output that can be counted, and night working that a named source documents. Paul Erdos published roughly 1,500 papers, more than any mathematician since Euler, worked up to 20 hours a day straight through the night, and left a collaboration record so large that 458 people hold an Erdos number of one. This is association, not cause
The 2024 cognitive analysis is cross-sectional. It shows that evening types and morning types score differently on the same tests. It cannot show that being a night owl caused the difference, and the authors do not claim it does.

A 13.5 percent gap in one sample reads dramatically. The meta-analytic correlation between eveningness and measured intelligence across the wider literature is r = 0.08. Both numbers are on this page because leaving the second one off would be dishonest.
